Appealing to Everyone

You Are Not Your User

Thank you Joshua Brewer for pointing that out, although this could maybe be better phrased "You are not all of your users". People are of such varied identities that there is no way that you can be all of them. In fact, you not being your users isn't the least of your problems.

Your Users Are Not Your Users Either

People are not all the same, and that means not all of your users are the same. Unless you are designing for one person, then your users are going to be a varied group that all need to accounted for in different ways. The reason there are so many scandals with companies making basic design mistakes is because they haven't taken into considersation the full range of different identities in the audience.

Diversification!

In this video, they explored a bunch of different dating apps. Why are there so many? Because each is built to appeal to a particular identity. Maybe the true solution to the problems user experience is to stop trying to have a single product that appeals to everyone. We can each take what works for us.

Finding the Common Ground

The other solution is to simplify the products and focus on the common ground that your users share. Looking at the intersectionality of the various identities of your users can help you find what they ahve in common.
